4 Things to Avoid Doing During a TMJ Flare-up

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including jaw pain, headaches, facial soreness, clicking sounds, and difficulty chewing. During a TMJ flare-up, even everyday activities can become uncomfortable. While proper treatment can help manage symptoms, knowing what to avoid during a flare-up is just as important. Certain habits can place additional stress on the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, making discomfort worse and potentially prolonging recovery.

Here are 4 things you should avoid during a TMJ flare-up.

1. Don’t Eat Hard or Chewy Foods

When your jaw joint is already irritated, hard and chewy foods can force the muscles and joint to work harder than they should. Foods such as tough meats, bagels, nuts, hard candies, and chewing gum can increase strain and aggravate symptoms.

During a flare-up, focus on softer foods that require minimal chewing. Options such as yogurt, eggs, soups, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and cooked vegetables can help reduce stress on the jaw while still providing proper nutrition.

Giving your jaw a chance to rest can promote healing and reduce discomfort.

2. Don’t Open Your Mouth Too Wide

Wide jaw movements can place additional pressure on the temporomandibular joints. Activities such as taking large bites of food, singing loudly, yelling, or excessive yawning may worsen pain during a flare-up.

When possible, cut food into smaller pieces and support your jaw gently if you feel a yawn coming on. Being mindful of excessive jaw movement can help minimize irritation and prevent symptoms from worsening.

3. Don’t Clench or Grind Your Teeth

Teeth clenching and grinding, also known as bruxism, are common contributors to TMJ symptoms. Many people clench their teeth during periods of stress or while sleeping without realizing it.

Pay attention to your jaw position throughout the day. Your teeth should not be touching when your mouth is at rest. If nighttime grinding is a concern, your dentist may recommend a custom oral appliance to help protect your teeth and reduce strain on the jaw.

Reducing clenching can significantly improve TMJ comfort.

4. Don’t Ignore Persistent Symptoms

Many people assume TMJ pain will simply go away on its own. While mild flare-ups may improve with rest and self-care, ongoing symptoms should not be ignored.

Persistent jaw pain, limited jaw movement, frequent headaches, or difficulty chewing may indicate a more significant issue that requires professional evaluation.

Early treatment can often prevent symptoms from becoming more severe.

TMJ flare-ups can be frustrating, but avoiding hard foods, limiting wide jaw movements, reducing clenching, and seeking care when necessary can help support recovery. If your symptoms continue or interfere with daily life, schedule an appointment with your dentist.
