That is an excellent practice! These regular appointments play a key role in helping you maintain a fresh and healthy smile. But what if your local dental office is currently closed and you are worried about missing your next preventive dentistry appointment? There is no need to worry. Let’s discuss why many dental practices are currently closed. Then, we’ll talk about some practical steps you can take to safeguard your oral health until your dentist resumes normal operations.

Complying with Social Distancing

COVID-19 is an extremely contagious and dangerous condition. The best way to prevent its spread is via social distancing. The current world situation has moved many dentists to postpone all elective and non-urgent treatment, and that includes routine cleanings and checkups. They do so for the health of both patients and staff members. Your well-being is their top priority!

When your dentist reopens, they will work hard to reschedule missed preventive appointments in a timely manner. You can also expect them to put extra measures in place to make sure you and your dental team stay safe.

Protecting Your Oral Health

Here are some concrete steps you can take to safeguard your oral health until your next dental appointment:

Analyze Your Oral Hygiene Routine

You likely already have a good oral hygiene routine, but it never hurts to consider whether your habits have any room for improvement. You can ask yourself, “Do I always brush the area along my gum line and the backs of my teeth? Am I diligent about flossing every evening? Is it time to replace my toothbrush? Am I diligent about using a mouthwash?”

Cut Back on Quarantine Snacks

Spending most of your time at home makes it all too easy to indulge in a lot of snacks each day. Frequently eating increases the chance that sugar and acids will weaken your tooth enamel and lead to cavities. Try to snack as little as possible. When you do snack, it is best to opt for tooth-friendly foods, like cheese, nuts, and non-citrus fruits.

Consult with Your Dentist

Even if you cannot schedule a checkup with your dentist, you can still seek advice from them. If you have any questions or concerns about your oral health, call your dentist or send them an email. They will get back to you as soon as possible. If you begin to experience any significant problems with our teeth, your dentist’s team can arrange an emergency appointment for you.

Social distancing is an important part of protecting our community. Until your dentist’s office reopens, use the above tips to care well for your teeth at home.
