Are Dental Implants Stronger Than Natural Teeth?

Dental implants are some of the most popular tooth replacement options, and given how powerful they are, it’s likely that they’re only going to become more prevalent with time. If you’ve looked into replacing teeth for any time at all, you’ve probably seen plenty of people raving about how incredible they are.

You may have even heard some people argue that dental implants are stronger than your natural teeth. It may sound hard to believe, but there are some pretty good arguments to be made that that’s the case. Here’s why someone might think that.

What Makes Dental Implants So Strong?

There are quite a few reasons why dental implants are so strong. The first has to do with the materials they’re made out of—unlike acrylic dentures, dental implants are usually made of a porcelain restoration affixed to a titanium implant.

However, the biggest factor by far is the way that the implant integrates with the jawbone. Titanium has the unique benefit of being able to actually fuse with bone, which is part of the reason that it’s the industry standard for implants of all kinds. This provides it with a unique level of security that other tooth replacement options do not have.

What Advantages Do Dental Implants Have Over Teeth?

Obviously, the best thing to do is to keep all of your natural teeth. That said, there are actually some advantages that come with having a dental implant. For one, the porcelain that makes up the restoration on your dental implant is much more resistant to tooth decay than your natural enamel. While that shouldn’t be used as an excuse to neglect your teeth in general, it may be a load off your mind to have one less oral health problem to worry about.

Are Natural Teeth Better At Eating?

That said, dental implants are rarely able to restore 100% of your original bite force. While they outperform dentures and bridges, they still have trouble giving you all of the strength to eat that you had before.

Dental implants are a great way to replace teeth, and they have a lot going for them. But as always, the best thing to do is to keep all of the natural teeth that you can.
