Gum disease develops due to plaque. This is the sticky, white film that builds up on your teeth. Plaque is made up of bacteria, so if it\u2019s not removed frequently and thoroughly, the gums can become inflamed. Over time, the gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets. Even more plaque accumulates in these pockets, and they can\u2019t be safely or properly cleaned with normal, at-home oral hygiene. At this point, professional treatment from your dentist is necessary. This is why your dentist will likely recommend scaling and root planing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is the Scaling & Root Planing Process?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scaling and root planing is a procedure comprised of two separate parts, usually performed over two appointments. For the first part of your treatment, your dentist will scale the teeth. This is when they use dental tools to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line, cleaning all the way down to the pocket. The second part of the treatment is called planing. At this point, your dentist will smooth out the roots of the affected tooth to help your gums attach to them more easily, promoting healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
